A stingy man swallows a cherry pit he picked up, and a cherry tree sprouts from the top of his head. Soon noisy crowds of blossom-viewers arrive to party beneath it, and when he pulls the tree out, the hole left behind fills with water and draws swimmers instead. The film reworks a traditional Japanese rakugo comic tale, relocating it to present-day Tokyo.
Why we picked it
Koji Yamamura's Oscar-nominated animation retells the rakugo tale of a miser who grows a cherry tree on his head. Its makers note it ranked in Annecy's list of 100 films for a century of animation.
